在高山上即使誘發精神困惑,一覽四周無盡景色,內心思維自會消融於天地間。可惜當人在聖母峰,四方八面再無視線阻隔時,反倒引爆另一維度的情慾困惑。《思凡》這部經典早已牽動西方人的心靈深處,以奇情愛戀故事啟動每個角色心底裏潛藏的暗黑往事。戲中恍似兩生花的兩個白衣女尼,在山中邂逅一位長居山上的西方型男,清純的心靈牽動俗世的漣漪。紅塵往事的思憶在高山翻滾,像感染了比高山症更嚴重的愛戀症候群,清心寡慾的女尼也被弄至頭昏腦脹。回憶就如電影所提出的黑水仙香水味,是誘人的迷藥,同時亦是精神性的解藥。細看此片定能覺察劇中人的國裔分歧,並從中辨識出這些角色是她也是你和我。精神困惑者總是孤獨地困在囚牢中,看不出前路,也見不到同路人。

On the mountain, you can stare at the boundless landscape and clear up mind confusion. But in Black Narcissus, the Himalayas becomes the place for a different dimension of carnal confusion. In this classic film which has long moved the hearts and souls of western audience, a wondrous love story becomes the spark that lights up the dark pasts of every character. The story follows two seemingly similar nuns whose pure souls are shaken when they meet a handsome British man. Memories of their past loves and the ghosts of their pasts become more infectious than any disease in the mountains. Like the scent of black narcissus, memories permeate both as a seductive aphrodisiac and an antidote for the mind. On closer inspection, one can see from the differences between ethnicities in the film that the characters represent all of us. Those who live in mental distress always feel like they're trapped inside a prison. There is no path forward and there is no one there for them.


高海拔之精神困惑


《思凡》是電影史上最美麗的電影之一,當年精緻的美術設計以及初期的特藝色彩別具革命性。大部分高山場景都在英國片廠拍攝,背景用的巨幕山頭及天空景色是用黑白照片拼貼,再由美工以油漆色彩繪製而成,視覺效果至今依然令人驚艷。還有電影動用的特技拼圖(matte painting)出神入化,尤其斷崖上的鐘台設計,早已成為傳奇影像。

用精神病理角度觀賞,能否鑑別這部電影是使人迷失的毒液,還是助人療癒的良藥?

電影開頭,一群英國修女授命遠離國土到喜瑪拉雅山上傳道,除了得面對天氣嚴峻和水土不服的問題,原來高山絕壁上的修道院亦是一座啟動七情六慾的實驗場。由平緩大陸,攀上高山的英式教養,到邂逅印度式的夢幻,文化分歧不在話下,內裏簡直是西方的邪撞正東方的毒。雖然電影的戲劇處境設置在地球最高的山嶺中,但大部分場景都是在英倫的片廠拍攝,除了用黑水仙香水的印度少師是由印度演員飾演,幾乎其他主要角色都起用白人演員,用評論角度觀之,可看出導演暗諷西方眼白、人心的曖昧意圖。

電影更前衛之處是對男性角色的描繪絕不流俗,白與黑皮膚在戲中發放出陽性光彩。兩個性格出塵的上流人士,再加一個鄰家小男孩,在修女眼中成了高處未算高的絕世高人,更是身在大自然庭園內比水仙花更美麗的出世族群。

此片在二次大戰後公映,那時世界仍未獲療癒,精神文明的末世喪鐘又再次響起。以新世代眼光重看,更發現《思凡》具備心靈啟示錄的意圖。


Madness in Thin Air

There's no doubt that Black Narcissus is one of the most beautiful films ever made. Even after all these years, its intricate art direction and pioneering use of colours still look revolutionary today. Mostly filmed in Pinewood Studios in the UK, the giant mountains and the sky in the background were initially black-and-white photos posted on boards before the colours were painted on by artists. The vivid results still feel as stunning as ever today. The film's use of matte painting was also masterful, with the clock tower on the cliff now seared into audiences' mind as one of the most iconic images in the history of cinema.

When you view this film from a psychopathological perspective, do you think that the film is a venom that disorients its audience or an antidote that heals its audience?

In the film, a group of British nuns are ordered to leave their homes and become missionaries in the Himalayas. In addition to harsh weather conditions and difficult living environment, the mountainous convent also becomes a testing ground for affections and desires. When British culture meets India's oriental fantasy, it results in a literal clash of the civilisations. Though the film is set on the world's tallest peak, most of it was actually filmed in Pinewood Studios in the UK. Almost every main cast is comprised of Caucasian actors, aside from the ethnic Indian actor who plays the young Indian general who uses the titular black narcissus perfume. When inspected from critical point of view, one can see the film as a metaphor for the ambiguous intentions of westerners in the East.

Perhaps what was most groundbreaking in the film was the complex and multi-layered portrayal of its male characters. Men of different skin colours get to unleash the radiance of their masculinities. In the eyes of the nuns, all three men stand at the heights of their attractiveness without peer. If the world is a garden, they are more beautiful than the glowing flowers within it.

Made in 1947, the film was released before the world was fully healed from the scars of the war. The result was another death knell for spiritual civilisation. Even when looking back with contemporary eyes, one can see that Black Narcissus is still revelatory in its own ways.
