影評人之選──思覺邊緣 Critics' Choice—Cinema of Psychosisnew



poster人的思覺走偏,往往與當事人經歷過林林總總的恐懼和不安有關,而為了自我保護,這些未解之結被壓抑在潛意識內。愛上不應該愛的人、長期被欺凌或性侵、政治迫害或思想改造等,這些被壓抑的恐懼久而久之會成為情緒病或認知上不協調的根源。 

1895年電影才剛面世,隨即成為心理學家用作研究病情的工具。而電影科技如剪接技術、疊像、扭曲變形和改變時序的功能,亦正好表現到思覺失調者的錯覺或情緒波動,有助於理解病患者的內心世界。

是次影評人之選的六部電影,其中日本衣笠貞之助的默片《瘋狂的一頁》(1926)和美國紀錄片大師弗德烈懷斯曼拍攝的《誰主瘋騷》(1967)都以精神病院作拍攝背景。前者廣泛應用電影語言去演繹精神病患者的扭曲視覺和激動的情緒狀態,加上很多富實驗性的視覺效果,把主角的幻想和真實情況平衡剪裁,以湊奇情之效;後者則是絶無添加的真實紀錄,聚焦拍攝一所精神病院內的病患者,近距離觀察醫護工作人員的日常。鏡頭所到,動魄驚心!

另外兩部是名導演杜魯福的和《情淚種情花》(1975)和法斯賓達《恐懼恐懼》(1975)。同時期拍攝的歐洲片,描繪兩個身處截然不同的歷史時空的女性。《情淚種情花》按雨果女兒的真實故事改編,溫柔婉約、學養高尚的雅黛兒,因愛上不愛她的男人,尾隨不捨而作出一個比一個可怕的抉擇,終至不能自拔。《恐懼恐懼》則成功描摹出抑鬱和恐懼會沒因由地滲入最平淡安逸的日常,而且令你做出始料未及的危險舉動,包括酗酒和自殘等行為。

米高鮑華和艾默力柏斯保格的英國經典作《思凡》(1947),寫一群修女進駐喜瑪拉雅山,把舊宮殿改裝成學校和診所,自耕自給。可眾修女因水土和地緣的變換,勾起沉寂多年的欲望和凡心,甚至由思凡欲念而衍生嫉妒與殺機。

捷克尤拉伊赫茲導演的《焚屍人》(1969),則把德軍入侵捷克時社會面對的荒謬、扭曲和無助感,灌注入一個表面常掛着笑臉的雙面人身上。語帶溫柔的自言     自語,與他冷血詭異的行徑成強烈對比,是一部把白色恐怖的病態現象套入一具成魔軀體的試驗之作!

處於病入膏肓和嚴重撕裂的社會、民眾身心俱受創傷之際,思覺與情緒急尋覓平衡調節的出路。好的電影好比一面鏡子,從真實或幻想的世界中,往往能找到心靈上的支點。但願這些不同歷史時空對心理狀態的闡述,能有啟迪治癒之效。

「影評人之選」自2010年首次舉辦,即將踏入十周年,多年來實有賴康樂及文化事務署電影節目辦事處的鼎力支持。今次「思覺邊緣」為本會首度主辦之節目,在此謹向歷年每位支持我們的影迷觀眾衷心致謝,希望本節目能繼續有長足進步。

A person's mental state goes awry for many reasons. They tend to be related to fear and discomfort that stem from past experiences as well as repression hidden deep within the subconscious that triggers a self-defensive mechanism. Repressed fear from events such as falling in love with the wrong person, extended physical or sexual abuse, political persecution or thought distortion can become the source of mental illness or cognitive dissonance over time.

When motion pictures were invented in 1895, it was immediately used as a research tool for psychologists. Filmmaking techniques such as editing, image overlap, distortion and non-chronological editing are effective in conveying the illusions or mood changes experienced by someone with early psychosis. It gave an entryway into understanding the inner world of the afflicted.

Among the six films chosen for this Critic's Choice series, Kinugasa Teinosuke's Japanese silent film A Page of Madness (1926) and American documentarian Frederick Wiseman's Titicut Follies (1967) are both set in psychiatric hospitals. The former employs film language to show the distorted perspective and excitatory state of mental patients. It also includes many techniques that were considered experimental at the time, such as parallel editing between the protagonist's fantasy and reality, to achieve that effect. Meanwhile, the latter is an observational document of reality that focuses on the everyday lives of patients and staff inside a psychiatric facility. The footage captured on camera will shock you.

The selection also includes Francois Truffaut's The Story of Adèle H. (1975) and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Fear of Fear (1975). These two European productions were made around the same time and tell the stories of women from different eras. Based on the life of Victor Hugo's daughter, The Story of Adèle H. follows a graceful lady who tells one horrifying lie after another after falling for a man who doesn't love her. Meanwhile, Fear of Fear successfully depicts the idea that depression and fear can appear in ordinary lives without warning, and those feelings can drive one to commit dangerous acts such as alcoholism and self-harm.

Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's beloved classic, Black Narcissus (1947), is about a group of nuns who go to the Himalayas and transform an old palace into a school and clinic in which its inhabitants will provide for themselves. However, the nuns' long-dormant desires are rekindled, and those desires even lead to jealousy and death.

Juraj Herz's Czechoslovakian film The Cremator (1969) places the absurdity, distortion and helplessness during the Nazi occupation onto a two-faced man who always has a smile on his face. The gentle words that he speaks to himself creates a stark contrast against his cold-blooded behaviour. The film attempts to take the feeling of white terror and reflect it from a person's transformation into a monster.

In a severely ill society in which people suffer from serious trauma, thoughts and emotions need to find a balance. A good film is like a mirror, offering a fulcrum for a soul from the real or fantasy world. We hope these interpretations of different points of history can offer healing and inspiration.
